The School of Engineering will celebrate undergraduate commencement on Saturday, May 11, 2013 in Gampel Pavilion, Storrs.

The ceremonies will begin promptly at 9:00 a.m.

A highlight of the commencement activities will be our guest speaker, Elizabeth “Betty” Shanahan, the Executive Director and CEO for the 21,000-member Society of Women Engineers (SWE), the driving force behind the establishment of a welcoming and diverse engineering culture that encourages young women to aspire to, and succeed in, rewarding engineering careers.

Before joining SWE, Ms. Shanahan spent 24 years in development, engineering management, and marketing for the electronics and software industries. She has been responsible for products and technologies in document viewing and conversion, parallel processing, signal-processing, and computer-aided software engineering. She began her career at Data General, where she was the only woman engineer on the Eagle minicomputer design project captured in Tracy Kidder’s The Soul of a New Machine. 

The recipient of numerous awards, in 2012 Ms. Shanahan was named one of STEMConnector’s “100 Women Leaders in STEM.” She is a fellow life member of SWE and a member of IEEE, ASCE, ASME, and the American Society of Association Executives. Read more about her distinguished career here.
