Each summer the School of Engineering and the Engineering Diversity Program host a variety of learning and research experiences for prospective students as well as grade 5-12 teachers aimed at sparking interest in engineering education and careers. During summer 2013, we tagged along for our Explore Engineering, BRIDGE and da Vinci Project summer programs – video cameras in hand – to document the energy and excitement these programs generate. Our summer outreach programs include:

BRIDGE, an intensive summer readiness program for underrepresented students (women and minority) who have been accepted for the fall semester. BRIDGE includes coursework in core math, chemistry, physics and computer science; tutoring; group study projects; and community building activities.

Explore Engineering, a week-long residential program for high school juniors aimed at helping them make comprehensive connections between their current math and science courses and many related engineering concepts.

da Vinci Project, a week-long enrichment program for junior and high school teachers in which participants learn engineering fundamentals and develop practical curricula and exercises that will help them introduce their students to engineering.
