The American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology recently released new guidelines to prevent heart attacks and strokes, focusing on cholesterol-lowering statin drugs.

Roughly a quarter of Americans age 45 and older already take statins, such as Lipitor and Zocor, to treat high cholesterol. But that number could grow sharply under these far-reaching guidelines.
