Why did you choose UConn?

I decided on UConn because it had an outstanding five-year teaching program and offered the most scholarships.

What’s your major/field of study, and what drew you to it?

My major is secondary education with a concentration in social studies. I wanted to be an educator since I was in 10th grade and took African American history. It was not the subject that invoked the passion of teaching in me but rather the teacher. Being a byproduct of a good education and teacher inspired me to do the same for the scholars to come.

Did you have a favorite professor or class?

My favorite courses were “Making the Black Atlantic” taught by Professor Dexter Gabriel, “Intro to Africana Studies,” taught by Professor Alhaji Conteh and “Major Works of Hispanic Literature” taught by Professor Vialcary Crisóstomo.

What’s one thing that surprised you about UConn?

One thing that surprised me at UConn was how large the school was.

What are your plans after graduation/receiving your degree?

My plan is to serve my community by becoming a social studies teacher that uplifts, edifies, and empowers my scholars to be the best they can be. As a teacher, I would like to build a relationship with my students and be a role model for them. My ideal classroom will be an environment that is open to new ideas and a place to shape and mold an upcoming generation. I strongly believe that acts of kindness, compassion, and patience will create a stable foundation for a learning environment.

“UConn has empowered me with a degree and provided me with a wealth of experiences and opportunities, including internships, leadership roles, networking opportunities, and accelerated programs, to prepare me for life beyond graduation.” — Brianna Bobo

How has UConn prepared you for the next chapter in life?

UConn has empowered me with a degree and provided me with a wealth of experiences and opportunities, including internships, leadership roles, networking opportunities, and accelerated programs, to prepare me for life beyond graduation.

Any advice for incoming students?

My advice for incoming students would be to explore! Do what excites and scares you. Do not be afraid to try new things. Do not be afraid to ask questions and put yourself into spaces that are not “designed” for you! This is an opportunity to not find yourself but to discover it and build from there.

What’s one thing everyone should do during their time at UConn?

Every UConn student should attend football and basketball games. They should get involved in clubs, as well as take courses outside your major.

What will always make you think of UConn?
The Husky and basketball will always make me think of UConn.
