Honors

UConn Health’s Dr. Rebecca Andrews continues her national leadership roles with the American College of Physicians, now as chair-elect of its board of regents. Representing internal medicine physicians, related subspecialists, and medical students, the ACP is the largest medical specialty organization and the second-largest physician group in the United States.

Amanda Crawford, assistant professor of journalism, won first place in the Human Interest Feature category of the New England Newspaper & Press Association’s Better Newspaper contest. Crawford’s narrative for Boston Globe Media followed the family of a victim of the 2012 Sandy Hook mass shooting for a decade from the tragedy through their lawsuits against conspiracy theorists.

Jason Irizarry, dean of the Neag School of Education, has been selected as the recipient of the 2024 Equity Champion Award by the Connecticut Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents. The award recognizes an individual who has been a champion for equity and has committed their life’s work to create conditions that are conducive to Latino advancement and supports.

Two Neag School of Education faculty members have been named Outstanding Reviewers for 2023 by the American Educational Research Association (AERA). Suzanne Wilson, Neag Endowed Professor of Teacher Education, received the award for her work with the Review of Educational Research, while Alyssa Hadley Dunn, director of teacher education and professor, was recognized for her service to the American Educational Research Journal. Both faculty officially received their awards earlier this month at the AERA 2024 Annual Meeting in Philadelphia

In Memoriam

Bob Casciola, 89, of Scottsdale, Ariz., who was the head football coach from 1971-72, on April 25.

James DeFronzo, 77, of North Easton, Mass., a professor emeritus who retired in 2003 after a 30-year teaching career, on April 24.

Gregory Frantz, 76, of Manchester, Conn., a retired professor of civil engineering, on April 3.

Ann Turley, 88, of West Hartford, Conn., a former secretary at UConn Law and the School of Social Work, on April 20.
