The UConn Dean of Students Office has re-established various services to assist off-campus and commuter students, under the guidance of Associate Dean of Students John Armstrong and Assistant Dean of Students David D’Alessandro. UConn is dedicated to supporting students and community members with the diverse aspects of off-campus living.

“Our goal is to help students find off campus housing, based on their needs, and to ensure their success as responsible community members and representatives of the University of Connecticut,” says Armstrong.

Off-campus and commuter services will be available to students at UConn Storrs, regional campuses, and all professional schools, by contacting the Dean of Students Office.

Key services include:

  • Assisting students in finding off-campus housing through the UConn Off-Campus Housing  website for all campus locations.
  • Collaborating with the Town of Mansfield and other municipalities on matters related to student living in the community. This involves working with town officials, police agencies, building and housing inspectors, planning and zoning officials, and community members.
  • Addressing community concerns by coordinating with municipal agencies and property owners to find appropriate and effective solutions.
  • Offering outreach and education to off-campus students on being respectful neighbors and communicating how their actions impact the community and those around them.
  • Serve as a point of contact for students seeking advice on off-campus housing and commuter issues through the Dean of Students Office.
  • Holding regular meetings with property managers near the Storrs campus and maintaining the UConn Off-Campus Housing website as a resource for students seeking or residing in rental housing.

“Many UConn students are only community members for four years, and outreach efforts to students living off-campus in residential neighborhoods, particularly in single-family homes that had been converted to student rentals, have been a cornerstone to improving the quality of life and helping proactively address and prevent problematic behaviors,” says Mansfield Town Manager Ryan Aylesworth. “The Town of Mansfield looks forward to continuing our close collaboration with UConn’s off-campus student services program to achieve positive outcomes for both students and the broader community.”

“Our relationship with off-campus services at UConn has improved the quality of life for both the off-campus students and their neighbors,” says Mansfield Mayor Toni Moran ’67 MA, ’88 JD. “I am extremely grateful for the role that John Armstrong and his staff have played. UConn is a very important part of our community and the presence of UConn students in off-campus housing is also an important part of the quality of life in Mansfield.”
