The University of Connecticut and Voyager Technologies are expanding their philanthropic partnership valued at more than $1 million, opening access to in-space research environments for UConn faculty and students. This partnership places UConn among a select group of institutions nationwide with the ability to conduct active research in space.
Through this partnership, UConn faculty and students will design and deploy research projects that leverage the unique conditions of space, including near-term experiments aboard the International Space Station and future opportunities through Voyager’s Starlab commercial space station.
“This expanded partnership places UConn at the forefront of discovery in a rapidly advancing domain,” says UConn President Radenka Maric. “By enabling research in space, we are unlocking new possibilities for innovation in areas critical to our future, from advanced materials to quantum technologies.”
Advancing High-Impact Research
Initial research efforts will focus on areas where space-based conditions offer unique advantages, including:
- Quantum timing and sensing technologies
- Metamaterials and advanced materials systems
- Microgravity-enabled research and manufacturing
Projects will be supported through a competitive internal research process led by UConn’s Office of the Vice President for Research, ensuring alignment with both university expertise and emerging industry priorities.
Each initiative will pair faculty leadership with graduate student researchers, creating hands-on opportunities to advance discovery while preparing the next generation of scientists and engineers.
Enabling Innovation Beyond Earth
By connecting UConn researchers with commercial space capabilities, the partnership creates a pathway to move promising ideas from campus labs into space-based testing and, ultimately, real-world applications.
Voyager’s growing VISTA (Voyager Institute for Science, Technology, and Advancement) network connects leading institutions with in-space research platforms to advance technologies with applications across commercial, civil, and national security sectors.
A Foundation for Continued Growth
This initiative represents an initial phase of collaboration between UConn and Voyager, designed to catalyze early-stage research and identify opportunities for expanded engagement.
The expanded partnership builds on UConn’s longstanding leadership in materials science, engineering, and advanced manufacturing, as well as its strong connections to Connecticut’s aerospace and defense industries, creating a platform for continued collaboration with Voyager.
