Recognition Highlights Strength of UConn Law’s LLM Programs

Four UConn Law programs are recognized among the top LLM programs for foreign-trained attorneys, highlighting the range and excellence of the law school’s graduate legal education offerings.

Four UConn Law LLM programs have earned recognition on the National Jurist’s 2026 Honor Roll of Best LLM Programs for Foreign Attorneys. U.S. Legal Studies, Human Rights and Social Justice, Insurance Law, and Energy and Environmental Law were selected for their academic quality, mentorship, practical training, career support, and overall student experience.

“At UConn Law, we are especially proud of the individualized support and personal attention we provide to our international LLM students,” says Yan Hong, director of Graduate Programs and Admissions. “Our students learn from accomplished faculty in small classes, have opportunities to take courses alongside JD students, and benefit from close interaction with faculty and dedicated staff throughout their studies. These connections allow international students to become an integral part of the UConn Law community while developing a deeper understanding of the U.S. legal system and their chosen areas of specialization.”

The four recognized programs offer international lawyers pathways to build expertise in the U.S. legal system and areas of practice.

The LLM in U.S. Legal Studies introduces foreign-trained attorneys to the American legal system through a flexible curriculum that students can tailor to their professional interests.

The Energy and Environmental Law LLM program derives its primary strength from an integrated approach that blends energy regulation and environmental policy through its dedicated Center for Energy and Environmental Law. The program offers a forward-looking, interdisciplinary curriculum focused on high-demand issues like the renewable energy transition, climate change adaptation, and green utility regulations.

The Insurance Law LLM program is the only one of its kind in the country. Students benefit from studying in Hartford, long recognized as the insurance capital of the U.S. Through the Insurance Law Center, they engage with leading scholars, practitioners, regulators, and industry professionals.

The Human Rights and Social Justice LLM combines rigorous academic study with hands-on advocacy through programs such as the Asylum and Human Rights Clinic. The program integrates international human rights and domestic civil rights perspectives, preparing graduates for careers in nonprofit organizations, public policy, government, and international institutions.

“Although these programs focus on distinct areas of law, they share a commitment to preparing students to address complex legal challenges,” says Dean Eboni S. Nelson. “Through rigorous study and practical experience, our LLM students develop the expertise to advance their careers and make meaningful contributions in their communities and around the world.”
