The health care workers at UConn Student Health and Wellness on the Storrs campus and those at UConn Health in Storrs Center were honored with a parade on Tuesday afternoon.

Sirens blared and people cheered to say thanks to all those that are on the front line managing the COVID-19 pandemic in Storrs. Similar parades have become familiar across the country, as ways to pay tribute to health care workers during the extraordinary pressures of the pandemic. A similar parade honored UConn Health workers in Farmington last month.

Although most students at UConn Storrs left campus in March, when the University moved classes online in response to the threat of COVID-19, hundreds, primarily international students, remain in residence halls and nearby off-campus housing. Student Health and Wellness recently began offering coronavirus testing for students at Storrs.

The parade consisted of vehicles from the UConn Police and Fire Departments, and many others from Facilities Operations, including Parking Services and Transportation.

The parade was led off by a UConn Police motorcycle, followed by President Thomas Katsouleas driving his car. UConn’s favorite son, Jonathan XIV, was present, along with his costumed human counterpart.

Also taking part in the parade were representatives of the Connecticut State Police, Windham Hospital, and the Mansfield Fire Department.
