The annual rite of first-year student move-in day took place on Friday at UConn Storrs, and the familiar buzz of student activity and excitement returned to campus after the quiet summer months. The largest Storrs-based class of over 4,000 new Huskies unloaded belongings from family vehicles and moved into residence halls across campus.
The first-year students had a unique high school experience, with the COVID-19 pandemic affecting much of their four years. While COVID increasingly seems like it will be part of everyday life for the foreseeable future, this year’s first-year students seem ready to begin their college career in a manner as close to “normal” as possible.
The students coming to Storrs, Stamford, Avery Point, Hartford, and Waterbury this week represent 158 of Connecticut’s 169 towns, along with 42 states and 38 countries.
The photographers of University Communications captured the excitement and bustle of move-in day, as students and families raced against inclement weather forecasts to get the job done.
The Class of 2026 will be welcomed with a formal Convocation ceremony on Friday night, which will be held in Gampel Pavilion instead of its usual Student Union Mall home, due to the forecast. The Husky WOW (Week of Welcome) will continue throughout the weekend as sophomores, juniors, and seniors move in, with classes starting Monday morning.
