The University of Connecticut will mark the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks with a number of special events on Friday, Sept. 11.
A University-wide remembrance ceremony will be held at noon in the Student Union Theatre. The event is being coordinated by University Safety and is open to all members of the University community and the general public.
The remembrance ceremony will feature members of UConn’s Police and Fire departments, as well as students from the Army and Air Force ROTC programs.
The event will be live streamed to allow faculty, staff, and students at the regional campuses and UConn Heath to participate.

Other events that day include:
- The UConn Veterans and Military Programs will hold their annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb in the bleacher at the Geroge J. Sherman Family Sports Complex. Participants in the event climb approximately 2,200 steps to remember the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. Those interested in participating should meet at the track at 8 a.m. and the event begins at 8:30 a.m. For more information on that event, called 860-486-2442 or email veterans@uconn.edu.
- The Storrs Congregational Church will ring its carillon bells at 8:46 a.m, the time of the first attack on the North Tower. The ringing will be followed by the playing of “Let There Be Peace on Earth” and the tolling of the bells 25 times.
- The UConn Student Union will have four wreaths on display during the day to honor the four downed planes. The community is encouraged to take a moment of reflection and tie a provided ribbon to a wreath. On the Fairfield Way side of the Union, 3,000 American flags will be on display to represent each life lost that day.
- The UConn Student Recreation Center will be lit in red, white, and blue at night.
