Professor Sir Cato T. Laurencin of UConn has been inducted into the Black Inventors Hall of Fame, joining a distinguished pioneering group of Black inventors and innovators whose contributions have advanced science, engineering, medicine, technology, and society.
The Black Inventors Hall of Fame presented Laurencin with the honor at its induction ceremony, held at the University of Chicago on July 16, recognizing him as a pioneering engineer-surgeon-scientist whose breakthroughs in regenerative engineering and biomaterials have created innovative approaches to healing and tissue regeneration affecting millions of people.
Laurencin is internationally recognized as the father of the field of regenerative engineering, which brings together advanced materials science, stem cell science, physics, developmental biology, and clinical translation to regenerate complex tissues and organ systems. In recognition of his global contributions, Laurencin was bestowed Knight Commander of the Order of St. Lucia, conferred under the auspices of King Charles III through the Governor General of St. Lucia.

Following the ceremony, Black Inventors Hall of Fame Executive Director James Howard stated that Laurencin’s acceptance speech delivered “an authoritative call to excellence, not as aspiration, but responsibility.” According to Howard, Laurencin emphasized the longstanding tradition of excellence within the Black community and the responsibility to carry that tradition forward with discipline and courage.
Laurencin has pioneered advances in polymeric nanofibers, polymer-ceramic materials, and bioinductive materials for tissue regeneration. His research has influenced the development of technologies for bone and soft-tissue repair, including bone-regeneration systems and biocomposite interference screws. Among his best-known inventions is the Laurencin-Cooper Ligament, a bioengineered matrix designed to support regeneration using the body’s natural processes. It is the first bioinductive implant and was highlighted by National Geographic Magazine in its “100 Discoveries that Have Changed the World” edition. His work has produced numerous patents and contributed to companies and medical technologies focused on tissue repair and regeneration.
The Intellectual Property Owners Education Foundation named Laurencin its 2023 International Inventor of the Year for his pioneering contributions to regenerative engineering and polymeric biomaterials for treating musculoskeletal conditions. President Barack Obama presented him with the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, the nation’s highest honor for technological achievement in ceremonies at the White House. He is the recipient of the highest honors of the American Chemical Society (the Priestley Medal), the Materials Research Society (the Von Hippel Award), and the National Academy of Engineering (the Simon Ramo Founder’s Award).
At the University of Connecticut, Laurencin serves as University Professor and Albert and Wilda Van Dusen Distinguished Endowed Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at UConn School of Medicine. He also holds professorships in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering. He serves as the CEO of The Cato T. Laurencin Institute for Regenerative Engineering, an Institute created and named in his honor.
Laurencin is the first surgeon in history elected to all four major National Academy. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the National Academy of Medicine, and an elected fellow of the National Academy of Inventors. He is also an elected fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
