UConn Continues IT Security Upgrades

The switch to SafeConnect from the NetReg system requires users to take action.

This summer, UConn is in the midst of rolling out new software called SafeConnect, a secure, reliable, and predictable IT operating system and network infrastructure that is cost-effective and easy to maintain. SafeConnect will replace the existing NetReg system, and will enable the University to ensure that network devices maintain a standardized security baseline, including user authentication, antivirus software, and operating system security patches.

In an email to the university community in July, Jason Pufahl, who heads IT security at UConn, wrote:

In order to help make this a smooth transition, please download and install the SafeConnect Policy Key Client as soon as possible. The installation process takes about a minute and is very straightforward. To download the SafeConnect Policy Key Client for your operating system click on one of the following links: Windows PolicyKey or Mac PolicyKey. Installing the file now will make you prepared for when SafeConnect is enabled on your network.

On your rollout date, which you can obtain from your local IT support person or the UITS Help Center, you can expect the following to occur:

If you have previously installed the Safe Connect Policy Key Client you will:

  • Automatically be prompted to authenticate to Safe Connect.
  • Enter your NetID and password.
  • Receive a confirmation message when you have successfully authenticated.

If you have not yet installed the Safe Connect Policy Key Client you will:

  • Launch a web browser.
  • When prompted, authenticate by entering your NetID and password.
  • When prompted, download and install the Policy Key Client.
  • Receive a confirmation message when you have successfully authenticated.

During rollout, your local IT system administrator will be available to assist with any problems you may encounter.
