On Saturday, May 9 Thomas E. Menighan, B. S. Pharm, MBA, (Hon) ScD shared his thoughts in a virtual Commencement for three UConn School of Pharmacy graduating classes (Ph.D., Pharm.D., and B.S.) , their families and friends across the region, country and world. It was a momentous occasion, a part of UConn’s larger University wide celebration, the first of its kind in the history of UConn. Menighan joined Philip Hritcko, Interim Dean and Associate Clinical Professor in making overarching welcome remarks on the School of Pharmacy’s virtual Commencement page.
Menighan is executive vice president and CEO of the American Pharmacists Association (APhA), the oldest, largest and most diverse pharmacists’ organization in America. He serves the APhA leadership and the pharmacy profession.
“Our School and students were very fortunate to have someone with such depth and breath of experience and character to speak across all cohorts and pharmacy fields. Although we could not be together, were were one in pharmacy on Saturday. Tom’s comment’s were certainly relevant, encouraging and inspirational for those heading out into the workforce at such an uncertain time,” said Hritcko.
Menighan has held several positions within the pharmacy profession, including president of APhA (2001-2002), member of the APhA Board of Trustees (1995-2003) and senior staff member of APhA (1987-1992). As senior director of external affairs, he managed state affairs, membership, public relations, new business development and practice management issues. He became chief executive officer and CEO of APhA in 2009.
He was owner of the Medicine Shoppe in Huntington, W.Va., for 20 years, and remains a founding partner in CompreCare, a multistate home infusion and specialty pharmacy. The parent company, PursueCare, is a telehealth company focused on assisting Substance Use Disorder patients. Together these companies serve patients in over 20 states. Previously, Menighan managed the PharMark Corporation, creator of RationalMed, the drug utilization system used by millions of state Medicaid enrollees. He founded SymRx, Inc., developer of CornerDrugstore.com, and SynTegra Solutions, Inc, a consulting firm focused on supply chain security for worldwide clients.
He currently serves as an elected board member of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), chairs the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), the Center for Pharmacy Practice Accreditation (CPPA) and is a board member of Pharmacy Quality Solutions. He received his BSPharm from West Virginia University School of Pharmacy, an MBA from Averett College and honorary Doctor of Science degrees from West Virginia University and the University of Charleston.
