Celebrate #GivingTuesday with a Gift for Scholarships

UConn joined the national celebration of philanthropy on Dec. 3 with a day-long fundraising drive focusing on student scholarships.

Giving-Tues-LogoToday, for the first time, UConn is participating in a national celebration of philanthropy known as #GivingTuesday.

#GivingTuesday was launched in 2012 to create a national day of giving to kick off the annual holiday season by celebrating and encouraging charitable activities in support of nonprofit organizations. It was added to the calendar on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday. The second annual #GivingTuesday is on Dec. 3, 2013.

The University is taking advantage of a dollar-for-dollar match provided by the Stamps Family Charitable Foundation for gifts to the Student Excellence & Scholarship Fund. Gifts will fund scholarships that recognize and reward exceptional students who exemplify leadership, perseverance, scholarship, service, and innovation.

Stamps Scholars receive full scholarship support to attend the University, and are guaranteed admission to UConn’s highly selective Honors Program. They also receive funding for enrichment activities, including summer research projects, national conferences, international travel and study, and more.

The Stamps Family Charitable Foundation will provide half the cost for up to five scholarships for Connecticut residents. The University will match those funds through gifts from private donors. Two of the scholarships are already available for the current academic year, and additional ones will be made available as the University raises the matching funds.

“We welcome the partnership with the Stamps Family Foundation to support exceptional Connecticut students and keep them in the state for their education,” says UConn President Susan Herbst. “Scholarship support is often the key factor for students choosing a school, so we are committed to expanding our scholarship funds to attract the state’s most promising students.”

The Stamps Family Charitable Foundation, founded by Penelope and E. Roe Stamps IV of Miami, selected UConn as one of its newest partners to provide full scholarships to exceptional incoming freshmen. The foundation, which now has 33 partners, began supporting students in 2006, when Penny and Roe Stamps created merit scholarship programs for undergraduates at their alma maters, the University of Michigan and Georgia Tech.
