U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney Coming to UConn April 1 for Town Hall Forum on Health Care

U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney (D-2nd District) will participate in a town hall forum on health care with students from the University of Connecticut’s School of Pharmacy and School of Nursing on Thursday, April 1 at the University’s main campus in Storrs.

The forum will take place from 4 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. in the Oscar and Julia Roth Classroom (Room 131) in the Pharmacy/Biology Building at 69 North Eagleville Road.

Dean Anne Bavier, School of Nursing, and Dean Robert McCarthy, School of Pharmacy, will serve as co-hosts for the event.

Courtney, BS ’78, is a graduate of the University of Connecticut School of Law. He represents Connecticut’s 2nd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, to which he was first elected in 2006. He serves on the House Education and Labor Committee and the House Armed Services Committee, and sits on the Higher Education and the Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions Subcommittees.

Courtney has championed students and their families across the country burdened with unprecedented costs for higher education. He helped pass the College Cost Reduction and Access Act, the largest increase in student aid since the G. I. Bill, and the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act.

Before serving in the U.S. House of Representatives, Courtney represented Vernon in the Connecticut General Assembly from 1987 to 1994. During that tenure, Courtney served as chairman for both the Public Health and the Human Services Committees, and also chaired the Connecticut Blue Ribbon Commission on Universal Health Insurance.

Courtney was recognized in a legislative poll in 1994 by Connecticut Magazine for his bipartisan efforts, and named the “Most Conscientious” and the “Democrat Most Admired by Republicans.”
