Engineering’s First Professor of Practice: David Gilbertson

Engineering Dean Mun Y. Choi announced that David Gilbertson has been selected as its first Professor of Practice. Mr. Gilbertson, an expert in informatics, information security and management, joined UConn in early 2010 as UConn's Associate Vice President and Chief Information Officer.

Engineering Dean Mun Y. Choi announced that David Gilbertson has been selected as its first Professor of Practice. Mr. Gilbertson, an expert in informatics, information security and management, joined UConn in early 2010 as UConn’s Associate Vice President and Chief Information Officer.

The newly unveiled Professors of Practice program enables the School of Engineering to attract world-class experts who will share their expertise as visiting instructors, collaborate in laboratory research, mentor and advise students or faculty, contribute to creativity and innovation initiatives, foster greater cultural/global awareness, assist in new curriculum development, or other activities intended to enhance the educational, research and outreach mission of the School of Engineering. Professors of Practice serve in a non-tenure track capacity.

Mr. Gilbertson brings extensive experience in data security. During his 27 years with the U.S. Army, he held a variety of top-tier positions including deputy commander of the Army’s Institute of Surgical Research and executive program manager for the Pentagon’s $1.5 billion Electronic Health Record (EHR). For the EHR, he managed an annual budget of $350 million and provided leadership for a staff of several hundred. He also served as CIO of the Tripler Army Medical Center and as CIO of the Army Medical Department Center and School, which boasts more than 3,000 faculty and staff and serves 15,000 students.

He is experienced in developing strategic information technology plans, implementing information technology governance, managing services, providing customer support, developing applications, and supporting academic computing.

Mr. Gilbertson received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Georgia, Athens, and his master’s degree in medical information sciences from Stanford University.
