Here’s what’s happening in November and early December.

Here is a list of University of Connecticut Health Center programs scheduled in November and early December. This information will be updated with any additions or other schedule changes (updated 11/8).

Nutrition for a Healthy Heart
Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2 to 4 p.m., UConn Health Center, Dowling North Building
The UConn Health Center’s Healthy Nutrition program invites you on a journey to a lower blood pressure, reduced cholesterol and healthier weight. This workshop is offered on the first Wednesday of the month. Registration fee is $30. Call 800-535-6232 for more information.

Breast-feeding class
Thursday, Nov. 3, 7 to 9 p.m.
, UConn Health Center, Onyiuke Dining Room
A certified lactation consultant leads a discussion of topics including the benefits of breast-feeding, how to get started, and how the rest of the family can help the breast-feeding mother as well as how to continue breast-feeding and working. Free IVF information session
Thursday, Nov. 3, 6 to 8:30 p.m., UConn Health Center, Conference Room EG-013
Specialists with the
Center for Advanced Reproductive Services lead an informational session about current treatments for infertility, specifically in vitro fertilization (IVF). Each program includes an in-depth explanation of the IVF process, discussion of some of the emotional issues surrounding IVF, and discussion of options for financial planning. “Medicine and Beyond” Ayurveda symposium
Friday, Nov. 4, through Sunday, Nov. 6

This is the sixth International Symposium for Ayurveda and Health, presented by Complementary and Alternative Supportive Care at the UConn Health Center in collaboration with the International Society for Ayurveda and Health. This program is approved for 18 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Registration is required. Email aguha@att.net for more information. Free labyrinth walk
Friday, Nov. 4, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Connecticut Mental Health Center at the Yale University School of Medicine, in collaboration with the International Society for Ayurveda and Health, is offering free guided labyrinth walks. The labyrinth is an ancient meditative tool with origins in India and is practiced throughout the world. Walking the labyrinth is believed to help balance and calm the mind. The “petit Chartres” labyrinth is painted in the colors of the chakra, the traditional Indian medicine concept representing the seven major energy centers of the body. This portion of the sixth International Symposium for Ayurveda and Health, presented by Complementary and Alternative Supportive Care at the UConn Health Center, is open to the public and no registration is required. “Magic of Sound” featuring Bhajan, Kirtan and light music
Saturday, Nov. 5, 6 p.m.

The public is invited to a musical performance featuring vocalist Smt Sanghamitra Chatterjee and Tabla virtuoso Pdt. Samir Chaterjee. The show is part of the sixth International Symposium for Ayurveda and Health, presented by Complementary and Alternative Supportive Care at the UConn Health Center. Childbirth preparation class
Saturday, Nov. 5, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This one-day class covers anatomy and physiology of pregnancy and labor, emotions of pregnancy, nutrition, fetal growth and development, comfort measures for labor, working with unexpected events in labor, cesarean delivery, and practice of relaxation and breathing techniques for labor. Class size is limited to eight couples. Remember to bring two pillows and wear comfortable clothing. Light snack is provided. Fee is $100. Infant care class

Offered for expectant parents and caregivers, the discussion topics include appearance and behavior of the newborn, car seat and home safety issues, well child care and the importance of immunizations, choosing a pediatrician, and practice with diapering and bathing a newborn. Free Discovery Series: “Managing Back Pain”

“Ready to Lose” weight management program

The UConn Health Center Auxiliary’s annual winter holiday shopping event includes vendors in the main lobby, Keller lobby and mezzanine, a bake sale sponsored by the Creative Child Center, homemade fudge sale, spa lotion and bath salt giveaways, and the Auxiliary’s popular raffle of gift baskets constructed and donated by UConn Health Center employees.
