Dr. Lori Bastian Named New Chief of General Medicine
Dr. Lori A. Bastian has been named the new chief of the Division of General Medicine in the Department of Medicine. Bastian joins UConn from Duke University Medical Center where she currently serves as interim chief of General Medicine and senior research associate in health services research at the Durham VA Medical Center.
She has clinical and research interests in women’s health, cancer prevention and primary care, and is widely published. Bastian also has considerable academic experience and has led numerous committees, academic and administrative activities at Duke.
Bastian will join the Health Center on July 1 and continue to pursue her interests in health services research and mentor students, residents, fellows and junior faculty in this area. She will see general medicine patients and have an affiliation with the VA Medical Center for some of her research activities.
Dr. Jay R. Lieberman Honored for Outstanding Orthopaedic Research
Dr. Jay R. Lieberman, a nationally prominent joint replacement surgeon and director of the New England Musculoskeletal Institute, was recently awarded the 2012 Kappa Delta Elizabeth Winston Lanier Award for Outstanding Orthopaedic Research.This prestigious honor recognizes Lieberman’s research on the benefits of gene therapy to enhance bone repair. The Elizabeth Winston Lanier Award is one of four research awards made annually by the Kappa Delta Sorority and the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) to successful scientists who are working to close the gap between basic research and patient treatment and care. All of the awardees, including Lieberman, were honored earlier this month at the 2012 annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS).
Dr. Kiki Nissen Appointed Interim Chief of Staff
Dr. Kiki Nissen has been appointed to the position of interim chief of staff. She will serve until a permanent chief of staff is appointed.
Nissen is currently the associate dean for graduate medical education and acting designated institution official in the school of medicine. In her role as DIO, she is involved in the oversight of approximately 50 graduate medical education programs and over 600 residents and fellows. Nissen also serves as vice chair of education in the Department of Medicine and maintains a primary care practice.
Board certified in internal medicine, she is a graduate of the UConn School of Medicine and completed her residency at UConn.
Nissen assumes the role currently held by Tom Callahan, who will now serve as vice president and strategy officer for Bioscience Connecticut on a full-time basis.
