Government Shutdown and the Potential Impact on NIH Funding

Jeff Small, associate vice president for research administration and finance at the University of Connecticut Medical Center, said the center has been holding “fire drills” to cope with a potential closure of the federal government since 2011, when a shutdown loomed because of partisan fighting in Congress over the budget and debt limit.

Empowering Patient/Physician Relationships

Many agree the patient and physician relationship is a critical key to improving health care. Overall, it starts right in that exam room with the patient and doctor on the same page. Proactive patients like Chuck Barshaw are more the exception than the rule. “My mom died of a heart attack and my dad had a warning of a heart attack,” said Barshaw. Knowing his family history helps to keep him on the same page with Dr. Jason Ryan, head of the UConn Heart Failure Center.
