Dr. George Lykotrafitis received an NSF CAREER Awards for research that aims to understand how sodium and potassium ion channels are distributed within axons of live neurons and to reveal how the arrangement of these channels affects the action potential – or messaging ability – of neurons. The work may help researchers better understand how signals propagate in neurons and pathways leading to epilepsy and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
