The state-of-the-art Outpatient Pavilion at UConn Health has been named the best in ‘New Construction’ in the state by The Connecticut Building Congress (CBC). The award ceremony for the 2016 CBC 20th Annual Project Team Awards is June 14.
CBC is awarding UConn Health’s Outpatient Pavilion as an outstanding building project exemplifying construction excellence and best practices in teamwork by project owners, architects, engineers, constructors and trades.
In early 2015 the all-glass, eight-story and more than 300,000 sq. ft. building, along with its attached 1,400 space parking garage opened. The unique facility conveniently offers in one location a full-range of primary and specialty care services and serves approximately 12,000 patients per month.
“UConn Health is thrilled to have our Outpatient Pavilion honored as the very best new construction in Connecticut,” says Tom Trutter, associate vice president of campus planning, design, and construction at UConn Health who will accept the award. “This award reinforces the new era at UConn Health with the physical transformation of our Farmington campus to match our daily excellence in patient care, research and education.”
“The beautiful Outpatient Pavilion was designed with our patients’ access and advanced medical care in focus and to allow UConn Health physicians, nurses and staff to take their already stellar patient care to a whole new level,” said Dr. Denis Lafreniere, medical director of UConn Medical Group whose physicians practice in the Outpatient Pavilion. He serves as chief of the Division of Otolaryngology at UConn Health. “Congratulations and thank you to our campus planning team at UConn Health, along with the talented architect and construction teams.”
The facility was a collaborative design by Centerbrook Architects and Planners of Centerbook, Conn. and HDR Architects of Princeton, New Jersey. New Haven’s Fusco Corporation and Clark Construction of Bethesda, Maryland, were also part of the design-build team that handled the shell and core of the project.
“We are proud that the Connecticut Building Congress has awarded this collaborative effort,” said Centerbrook partner Chad Floyd, the firm’s lead architect of the Outpatient Pavilion. “It is a transcendent facility for UConn Health that works seamlessly with the campus environment while exhibiting unique characteristics of its own.”
This marks the second time UConn Health’s Outpatient Pavilion has been honored. It garnered an Award of Merit at the Connecticut Green Building Council Awards in 2015. The facility is also slated to receive Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
This summer the Outpatient Pavilion is expanding its services to offer a new family medicine practice to care for patients of all ages and a new women’s center will open offering: OB/GYN services, maternal fetal medicine, infertility, and a full range of imaging such as 3D breast tomosynthesis, mammograms, and the latest ultrasound technology.
In addition, the facility’s other recently expanded outpatient services include: advanced radiation therapy, stroke and neurology care, rehabilitative medicine, a 24 chair cancer infusion room for patients receiving chemotherapy, The Maryann dePreaux Walmsley Cancer Center Library at the Carole and Ray Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center, plus there is a new outdoor patio for patients and families to enjoy. It also has the convenience of blood draw stations which are even open on Saturday and a new retail pharmacy is on the way.
