In the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings of 185 U.S. medical schools, the UConn School of Medicine has made notable strides in Primary Care and Research, the two main categories. In the primary care category, the school is ranked at No. 31, up 15 spots from last year; and in research, it ranks No. 52, up five spots from last year. In a newly created category for medical student debt, out of 114 schools, the UConn School of Medicine had the 22nd lowest average student debt.
“We have consistently ranked high in both research and primary care categories over the past few years, but this year has yielded the School of Medicine’s most competitive ranking to date among the top medical schools in the U.S.,” says Dr. Bruce Liang, dean of the School of Medicine. “We are proud of the commitment, hard work, and dedication from our faculty and student body that have helped us achieve these remarkable results.”
Dr. Andy Agwunobi, CEO of UConn Health, says he is pleased to see the increase in ratings, especially in the primary care category. “It reaffirms that we are continuing to work diligently to strengthen our academics as we prepare doctors for future placement in areas such as internal medicine, family practice, and pediatrics,” he says. “I applaud Dr. Liang and his team as they continue to strive for excellence.”
To determine the rankings, the 152 medical schools fully accredited in 2018 by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and the 33 schools of osteopathic medicine accredited in 2018 by the American Osteopathic Association were surveyed in fall 2018 and early 2019.
