UConn Health’s pharmacy residency program has been awarded an eight-year reaccreditation by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), the maximum duration available for renewal.
The pharmacy residency program is closely affiliated with the UConn School of Pharmacy, and first earned full accreditation status from ASHP in 2013. The residency program provides a year-long opportunity to pharmacists, to develop the skills and knowledge to become clinically oriented pharmacists. They are trained to care for patients with a wide range of conditions, and to be responsible for medication-related care of patients, contributing to positive patient outcomes. Residents are eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two pharmacy residency training. The pharmacy residency program develops pharmacy student expertise in the areas of acute patient care, ambulatory care and primary care, drug information, and management.
Dr. Kimberly Metcalf, UConn Health’s senior director of hospital operations stated: “The reaccreditation of 8 years for this program speaks volumes as to the leadership, commitment, and contribution our pharmacy staff and faculty make to this programs’ success. It is an amazing accomplishment of receiving the maximum allowable reaccreditation period and our residency program director, Dr. Kevin Chamberlin, deserves all the recognition afforded for his tireless work.”
Chamberlin, UConn Health’s pharmacy residency program director shared: “This successful maximum duration accreditation was achieved through the culmination of many people’s hard work across the pharmacy team and our institution.” Chamberlin also serves as associate clinical professor and assistant department head of the pharmacy practice at UConn School of Pharmacy.
“Our pharmacy residency program graduates go on to do great things, ranging from continued training in postgraduate year two (PGY2) subspecialty training programs around the country, to clinical pharmacist positions, and pharmacy faculty careers,” he continued.
The program is proud of its 100% match rate for its one-year pharmacy residency program students choosing to pursue a second year of pharmacy residency training. “This match rate is unparalleled amongst residency programs across the country and can only be attributed to the strong recruitment processes at UConn, intensive training they receive during residency, and extensive networking of our national and world-renowned staff and faculty involved with the program,” Chamberlin said.
