Why did you choose UConn?
I chose UConn because of its Special Education program. I knew UConn had a great School of Education, so I decided to go visit campus. Even after touring on a rainy day, I still loved it and knew it was the school for me.
What’s your major and why did you choose it?
I am a Special Education major. I chose this as my major because I’ve wanted to be a teacher since I was little. I worked with students with disabilities in high school, and because it was such a rewarding experience for me, I knew I wanted to continue doing that in the future.
Who was your favorite professor and why?
My favorite professor is Melodee Walker. I have been fortunate enough to have Melodee for two different courses. She has taken the time to build a relationship with our entire cohort and you can tell that she genuinely cares about each of her students. During the time I have had Melodee, she has advocated for our cohort, and has encouraged us to advocate for ourselves as well. Melodee has also been very supportive, especially through the edTPA process.
What was your favorite class and why?
My favorite class was EPSY 3010 because I learned about the importance of having a growth mindset. This class made me realize that I had more of a fixed mindset than I thought, and encouraged me to change the way I think about things. It also encouraged me to think about how I can teach my future students about the importance of having a growth mindset.
What are your plans after graduation?
I will be returning to UConn in the fall to get my master’s. After that, I plan to become a Special Education teacher.
What’s one thing that surprised you about UConn?
One thing that surprised me about UConn is that it doesn’t feel like it’s as big of a school/campus as it really is.
What’s your favorite thing about UConn?
My favorite thing about UConn is the school spirit. Whether it’s in Gampel for a basketball game or just walking around campus wearing UConn apparel, everyone shows that they are proud to be a Husky.

I was involved in UConn Future Educators, Windham Heights Tutoring, and was the secretary for the Teacher Education Student Association (TESA).
What’s one thing all UConn students should do during their time at UConn?
All UConn students should watch the sunset at Horsebarn Hill during their time at UConn.
How has UConn prepared you for the next chapter in your life?
UConn has prepared me for my future career by giving me an opportunity to get hands-on experience in several different school districts in the state. During my time in each placement, I have built confidence in my abilities to be an educator and have learned valuable information from the experiences I have had that I will take with me in my career in the future.
What’s something you learned in a class that you’ll always remember?
Something I learned in a class that I will always remember is “the power of yet.” The power of yet reminds us that some things may not always come easy and may take more time and effort. You may not be there yet, but if you believe you can grow and learn, you will get there in time.
What is one thing that will always make you think of UConn?
One thing that will always make me think of UConn is my future classroom. When I am in my classroom teaching my students, I will think back to all of the experiences and opportunities I had during my time at UConn that led to me being a teacher.
Any advice for incoming first-year students?
Get involved and don’t be afraid to try new things! There are so many great clubs and organizations on campus to get involved with, and you may never know what you’re truly passionate about unless you try something new.
