This fall UConn Health and its faculty have been applauded on the national stage for their accomplishments. The most recent accolades include:
American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Executive Committee Welcomes New Member
Dr. Augustus (Gus) Mazzocca is a new member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) Executive Committee. He currently serves as president of the New England Shoulder and Elbow Society.
Gus has been a member of ASES since 2006. Over the years he has served on many committees of the society including Publications, Open Meeting and Research. As Chair of the ASES 2018 Annual Meeting Committee and Education Committee, he contributed his knowledge and talents to advance education and research of ASES. Gus brings several other unique qualities to the table such as boundless energy, a “can do” approach, and enthusiasm. Education, translational research, and clinical care have been his professional passions. He is well-known throughout the world for being a strong contributor at ISAKOS and SECAC. In his new role, Gus hopes to harness and focus our members’ energies, grow the society’s mission of education, research, and clinical care in a manner that encompasses the globe.
Wizdom Powell Selected for Science of Psychology Award
The Connecticut Psychological Association (CPA), has selected Wizdom Powell, Ph.D. as the 2020 recipient of the Distinguished Contribution to the Science of Psychology Award. She was honored during the 34th annual CPA Convention on Nov. 13.
This award is in recognition of the important community-based research she is conducting on the role of modern racism and gender norms on African American male health outcomes. Her research and writing on gendered health inequities among vulnerable males is making an impact here in Connecticut and throughout the world.
Sickle Cell Disease Association Presents Awards at National Convention
The Sickle Cell Disease Association of America presented Dr. Biree Andemariam the 2020 Chairman’s Award at its 48th annual national convention.
Andemariam is past chief medical officer and board vice-chair of the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America, a board-certified hematologist and founding director of the New England Sickle Cell Institute (NESCI) at UConn Health. NESCI serves over 300 adults with sickle cell disease in a dedicated facility where patients have access to comprehensive care as well as clinical research trials. Andemariam’s primary research focuses on novel therapies and new pathways of care.
