This summer UConn Health dental and orthopedic faculty and staff have been applauded on the local and national stage for their accomplishments.

 

AOSSM Hall of Fame Inductee

Dr. Robert Arceiro, chief, Sports Medicine Division, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, UConn Health was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) and received the Robert E. Leach, MD Sports Medicine Leadership Award at the 49th annual meeting of the AOSSM.

In 2001, AOSSM established the Hall of Fame to honor members of the orthopedic sports medicine community who have contributed significantly to the specialty and set themselves apart. Being inducted into the Hall of Fame is one of the highest honors given to a Society member.

The Robert E. Leach, MD Sports Medicine Leadership Award (formerly Mr. Sports Medicine Award) is given to an individual who has provided outstanding service in the orthopedic community and made numerous contributions to the specialty of sports medicine.  The recipient is chosen by the AOSSM President, President-elect, and Vice President. The winner receives a $5,000 donation to his/her charity of choice, an award plaque, and a 15-minute award presentation/recap of the individual’s career at the Annual Meeting.

Dental Researcher and Educator Recognized as “Rising Star”

Eliane Dutra, DDS, MSD, PhD, and assistant professor of Orthodontics in the UConn School of Dental Medicine, has received the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) 2021 Rising Star Award, which includes $50,000 in funding focused on research she is conducting in addition to her ongoing KO1 projects.

ASBMR’s mission is to promote excellence in bone, mineral, and musculoskeletal research, foster integration of clinical and basic science, and facilitate the translation of that science to health care and clinical practice. The ASBMR Rising Star Awards provide funding to physician-scientists in the bone field who have already been recognized by NIH “K awards” and other similar international professional development programs.

Dental Practitioner Named Oral Health Hero

The Connecticut Dental Health Partnership (CDHP) has recognized Heather Sperry, clinical practice manager, UConn School of Dental Medicine, with its “Oral Health Hero” Award. This recognition lauds Sperry for demonstrating commitment, dedication, and passion in providing excellent oral health services to HUSKY Health members, in collaboration with CDHP.
