I think the best way to honor [veterans’] service is to enjoy the privileges we have here in the United States but also try to improve the shortcomings of our government and society. — Jordan Dean
How did you spend your time in the Air Force?
I spent most of my time working as a medic. Treating patients, learning about medicine, and being able to train other health care providers in the military led me on a path towards pursuing medicine as a physician. I joined for a wide array of reasons. Traveling, cool training, and a sense of adventure were some primary motivators. The benefits to pay for schooling were also strong reasons for joining.
How does your military service fit into your overall plans to be a physician?
I have no plans to serve in the military again, but I think as a future physician there will be many other opportunities to serve my local community and communities around the world through volunteering, teaching, and medical mission trips. I’m not sure yet which specialty I’ll pursue, but I’m currently considering neurosurgery or ophthalmology.
What is the best way for the rest of us to honor the service of our veterans?
Nearly all veterans serve because they’re proud of their country. I think the best way to honor their service is to enjoy the privileges we have here in the United States but also try to improve the shortcomings of our government and society. Fighting against injustices, utilizing your right to vote, and doing what you can to make our country better for all people are the best ways to show your patriotism and honor the service of veterans.
What does Veterans Day mean to you?
It’s a nice gesture to show support for veterans and a great excuse to go out to eat with friends and family.
What else would you like to say?
I would like to thank my wife, Lauren, who has been my rock through all the crazy ups and downs being in the military put us through.
