If Krystal Zhao had only one word to describe her time at UConn, she might use the word “experience.”
Zhao, a sport management and psychological sciences major, not only had the experience of coming to UConn as an international student, but she also went skydiving, rode horses, trekked the outdoors, and volunteered with the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
She advises incoming students to do things outside their norm and realize every experience is part of life’s journey.
Why did you choose UConn?
As an international student, studying and living in the United States has always been my dream. After traveling the U.S. several times, I really found myself living and exploring the New England area. Geographically, UConn’s location is the perfect choice for me, where I can access the cities easily while still having a tranquil place to study. More importantly, since I want to work in the sport industry, UConn’s great sport management program and fabulous college sports atmosphere caught my attention to pursue my undergraduate degree. Last but not least, in high school, I was obsessed with horseback riding. UConn provides horseback riding practicum lessons for all levels of riders, allowing me to continue my hobby after I came.
What’s your major or field of study, and what drew you to it?
I am majoring in sport management and psychological science. Sports have always been an essential part of my life growing up. During high school, I thought if I could take what I am passionate about as a major and make it a future career, that would be one of the happiest things for my life. In addition, my vision of my role in the sport industry evolved from becoming a member of it to using it as a bridge to promote a better society.
Did you have a favorite professor or class?
I loved my sport management professors. They not only taught me professional knowledge but also shared many insightful life lessons that I can carry with me as assets no matter where I go in the future. I appreciated that I got into our program, where I truly found a sense of belonging and built many positive relationships with my professors.
What activities were you involved in as a student?
I really enjoyed trying new things and UConn provided me with a variety of activities to join. Since I had a strong passion for meeting different people from diverse backgrounds, I was involved in the Student Ambassador Club as a member, First Year Experience as a peer mentor, and the Orientation office as an orientation leader. Additionally, I went to many sport events on campus and some outdoor activities with the Adventure Center. I had so much fun and made many memories here.
What’s one thing that surprised you about UConn?
I could never imagine having a chance to go skydiving with UConn. That was a really exciting experience, and I will always remember the moment when I jumped off the helicopter.
What are your plans after graduation/receiving your degree?
I plan to go to graduate school to further develop my knowledge, combining higher education and the sport industry. I would like to become a scholar and practitioner to make some positive impact on student-athletes in the future.
How has UConn prepared you for the next chapter in life?
UConn provided me with many valuable opportunities and resources to gain transferable skills through both theoretical and practical experiences. More importantly, UConn was a platform for me to build many positive relationships with faculty members and fellow students with whom I would like to keep in touch in the future.
Any advice for incoming students?
I would say always get out of your comfort zone to be present and try new things. Also, take everything as an experience and realize that everything is a process. More importantly, it is important to find a balance and enjoy the moment!
What’s one thing everyone should do during their time at UConn?
Definitely go to one of the basketball games, even if you are not a sports fan. It will be an incredibly fantastic experience to feel the UConn pride!
What will always make you think of UConn?
I think it is sports, not only because of UConn’s great sports atmosphere but also because of people who I met at UConn from sports.
