A new UConn Extension publications site launched recently and provides fact sheets on topics affecting Connecticut residents, municipalities, and businesses. With the internet full of questionable sources, the science-based resources provided by UConn Extension offer trustworthy guidance with the backing of experts in a variety of areas, from reducing flood risk in communities to food safety tips and everything in between.
“Creating a one-stop resource like this makes it easy for residents to find quality information they can apply to solve everyday problems,” says Amy Harder, associate dean for Extension in the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources (CAHNR). “It’s hard to know if some of the information that can be found online should be trusted. We want to help people quickly access answers that are proven to be successful for Connecticut.”
Residents can benefit from resources on storm preparedness, financial management, and all things “horses,” to name just a few. Connecticut ranks third nationally for equine density, and fact sheets for horse owners and managers cover topics from safe trailering to disaster preparedness. Worried about plant damage from four-legged diners? Another publication on deer management provides strategies for the abundant white-tailed deer population negatively impacting grounds across Connecticut. Fact sheets targeted to the business community are also available. Industries like commercial fruit, vegetable, and greenhouse growers will find the page blooming with resources, like preparing for weather events, climate adaptation strategies, disease and pest management, and crop cultivation.
All publications are free of charge and can be downloaded or printed. There are fact sheet categories and a search feature to help users find the publications they need, and a website form allows readers to request new topics.
UConn faculty and staff within the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources author the fact sheets. A subject-matter expert reviews each fact sheet before publication to ensure the information is accurate and up to date. All fact sheets are reviewed every five years to include the latest research and current best practices. Additional fact sheets will become available each month.
The Digital Experience Group at UConn built the site, including features to enhance user experience. The fact sheets are some of the many resources that UConn Extension has available on-demand, including over 600 educational YouTube videos, in-person workshops, webinars, and online certificate programs.
