It’s a repeat-win. A winning ‘A’ for patient safety excellence goes to UConn Health for the seventh time in a row since 2021.
This Spring 2024, UConn John Dempsey Hospital is nationally recognized once again as a national champion in patient safety by the nonprofit watchdog The Leapfrog Group.
UConn’s teaching hospital has earned its seventh consecutive ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade for its strong track record of providing its patients with care that meets the highest possible ratings for patient safety.
“We truly are national champs in patient safety at UConn Health,” exclaims UConn Health Interim CEO Dr. Bruce T. Liang. “This back-to-back yearly recognition by The Leapfrog Group shows how seriously our leadership team, doctors, nurses, and staff take each patient’s safety and care. Congratulations and thank you to our entire workforce for this amazing teamwork.”
“When it comes to patient safety, UConn John Dempsey Hospital continues to excel at the highest level,” says Caryl Ryan, RN, chief operating officer of UConn John Dempsey Hospital and chief nursing officer for UConn Health. “This award confirms what we see every day at UConn Health – a strong commitment to patient safety practiced by all our providers and staff throughout the hospital. We hope everyone in Connecticut can experience the UConn Health difference. I applaud all our health care providers for their outstanding care and compassion for our patients. You are the reason we receive this highest A-rating in patient safety year after year.”
“We are a nationally award-winning academic medical center because patient safety remains our top priority. Repeatedly earning a Leapfrog ‘A’ joins our recognitions by Newsweek as a top world hospital and the highest ranking for patient experience by Healthgrades,” says Dr. Scott Allen, chief medical officer and patient safety officer at UConn Health. “UConn’s high-quality care is a reflection of the strong culture of safety practiced by our great staff and is the reason why we have become a leading destination for health care.”
Leapfrog assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over thirty measures of errors, accidents, injuries, and infections as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.
“Everyone who works at UConn John Dempsey Hospital should be proud of this ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “It takes complete dedication at every level, and an ironclad commitment to putting patients first. I thank UConn Health, its leadership, clinicians, staff, and volunteers for caring so deeply for its patients and their safety.”
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program focused exclusively on preventable medical errors, infections, and injuries. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
