Farmington is a long way from Puerto Rico, and when deciding to attend UConn School of Medicine, Amanda Hernandez Rodriguez initially worried about homesickness. Now, as she prepares to receive her degree and embark on an OB/GYN residency, she looks back on how quickly she felt at home at UConn. As president of the Latino Medical School Association, she organized social events with fellow students and the broader community, and as a participant in the Culture Shock fundraiser, she choreographed and practiced dance routines with friends – all part of the active social life she built alongside her studies. Now, wherever her career takes her next, she’ll always have fond memories of UConn.

Why did you choose UConn?
I usually joke that UConn chose me. Initially, I had no intentions of leaving Puerto Rico for medical school, but after participating in UConn’s MCAT Prep Program the summer before applying, I fell in love with the program. I was exposed to many staff and faculty members who provided inspiring lectures and words of encouragement. They supported me and convinced me to apply, and once I received my acceptance, I knew there was no other place I could imagine earning my degree from.

What’s your area of specialization, and what attracted you to it?
I applied for an obstetrics and gynecology residency because I love the important role these physicians play in empowering women through education. This specialty allows me to perfectly combine my desire to help patients with my passion for teaching. It is incredibly rewarding to support them through significant moments in their lives.

Did you have a favorite professor or class?
I loved the Clinical Longitudinal Immersion in the Community (CLIC) program. I was paired with the amazing Dr. Jaclyn Olsen Jaeger at the beginning of my first year of medical school, and we worked together for three years at a geriatrics office. This program immediately exposed me to direct patient care, allowing me to learn from an excellent mentor, practice my clinical skills, and build relationships with patients from an early stage.

What activities were you involved in as a student?
I was president of the Latino Medical School Association and had the opportunity to organize many social events with both fellow students and the Hispanic community. We hosted salsa and merengue classes, visited the Hartford Public Library to spend time with the community, and even created Medical Spanish sessions for the school. My favorite event was our annual potluck sessions, where we shared foods and desserts from all over the world.

What’s one thing that surprised you about UConn?
I was surprised by how quickly I felt comfortable and at home. I expected to be overwhelmed with homesickness due to the big culture change, but my classmates were some of the most welcoming and friendly people I have ever met. I never truly felt alone and was immediately swept up in the excitement of bonding with new people and creating what I hope will be lifelong friendships.

What are your plans after graduation/receiving your degree?
I’m excited to continue my education during my OB/GYN residency, wherever the Match sends me [Editor’s note: After this interview, Amanda matched to an OB/GYN residency at Nuvance Health Consortium]. I’m thrilled to start the next chapter in my medical journey and immerse myself in my favorite specialty. However, what I’m looking forward to the most is getting married in the summer and finally adopting a dog as my graduation gift to myself!

How has UConn prepared you for the next chapter in life?
UConn is excellent at not only teaching us medical knowledge but also showing us the importance of listening to our patients. I’m a huge advocate of providing personalized, compassionate care, and many of UConn’s faculty members have taught me exactly that. They lead by example, preparing me to apply these skills to the diverse populations I will encounter.

Any advice for incoming students?
I think the most important thing is to embrace change eagerly and always be willing to say “yes” to new opportunities. Medical school is an experience like no other, but having the chance to go through it alongside new friends transforms it from a daunting experience into an amazing one. Make sure to always include fun and relaxation during your priorities!

What’s one thing everyone should do during their time at UConn?
My favorite UConn event is the annual “Culture Shock” fundraiser, a cultural talent and fashion show where all proceeds are donated to help the Hartford community. I would encourage everyone to participate at least once, as choreographing dances and practicing with friends was one of the highlights of my medical school experience. But, since stage fright is very real, enjoying the event from the audience is also a spectacle. Trust me: you’ll be amazed by the incredible talent your classmates (and attendings!) bring to the stage.

What will always make you think of UConn?
No matter where I end up, wearing my white coat will remind me of the wonderful place that helped shape me into a doctor. I’ve had so many phenomenal experiences, both educational and fun, and I’m incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to pursue my medical school dreams at UConn. It will always hold a special place in my heart. Once a Husky, always a Husky!
