Autumn Bordieri is graduating with a degree in social work and spent her undergraduate career at UConn Hartford. She enjoyed the strong sense of community and belonging at the campus, and will be starting on a master’s in social work next year. Autumn was also involved in an a cappella singing group and worked at the Academic Achievement Center.

Why did you choose UConn?
I chose UConn because it was a name in my house since I was a kid. My grandma has always been a huge UConn fan, especially basketball. I also came to my decision about the Hartford campus in particular because of its academic reputation, diverse community, and the beautiful campus in the city.

What’s your major or field of study, and what drew you to it?
My major is social work. I was drawn to this field because of my passion for helping others and understanding people from a holistic perspective. When joining the program, I realized I had been doing “social work” my whole life!

Did you have a favorite professor or class?
Yes, all of my social work professors and classes. I was able to be myself and communicate openly without judgment. I learned so much not only from the content but also from my peers. However, my most memorable class was taught by Milagros Marrero-Johnson. She brought in multiple guest speakers from all aspects of social work so we could get an understanding of the different fields and careers.

What activities were you involved in as a student?
I believe that being involved on campus is a key part of the college experience. It allows you to network and make forever connections. For all four years at the UConn Hartford campus, I worked at the Academic Achievement Center. First, as a student worker, then a peer mentor, and lastly, an academic coach. I enjoyed being a part of the programming committee in USG, as I was able to help advocate for students’ wants on campus. Lastly, I am the secretary for UConn Sing, an a cappella group on the Hartford campus.

What’s one thing that surprised you about UConn?
One thing that surprised me about UConn, particularly the Hartford campus, was the strong sense of community and support among students and faculty. Everyone is genuinely invested in each other’s success and well-being. I was also surprised by all of the opportunities within my reach.

What are your plans after graduation/receiving your degree?
After graduation, I will be starting the advanced-standing master’s of social work program so that I can receive my master’s degree in spring 2026!

How has UConn prepared you for the next chapter in life?
UConn has equipped me with the knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary to succeed, not only in social work but also in life. The emphasis on critical thinking, collaboration, and real-world application has been invaluable.

Any advice for incoming students?
My advice for incoming students is to take advantage of all the opportunities UConn has to offer. Get involved in clubs and organizations, seek out internships, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Make the most of your time here!

What’s one thing everyone should do during their time at UConn?
Everyone should attend a UConn basketball game at Gampel Pavilion or the XL Center! The energy and school spirit are incredible, and it’s a great way to feel connected to the university community.

What will always make you think of UConn?
The iconic Jonathan the Husky and Al’s Deli in Hartford.
