Achievement

Nancy Balcom, Connecticut Sea Grant associate director, received the William Q. Wick Visionary Career Leadership Award from the Sea Grant Extension Assembly. The award is given “in recognition of outstanding career achievement, leadership, vision and contribution to Sea Grant Extension through administration.” In addition to being the associate director, Balcom is also the extension program leader for Connecticut Sea Grant. Balcom plans to retire this fall.

Dana Kotler, a senior auditor in the Office of Audit & Management Advisory Services, published an article for the Association of College & University Auditors on August 14. The purpose of the article was to provide practical support to internal auditors working in higher education as they plan and perform audits.

Jack Crane, 92, a member of the Institute of Materials Science External Advisory Board for more than two decades and a leading advocate for manufacturing in Connecticut, on Sept. 22.

Dominique Soucy Matteson, 44, of West Hartford, Conn., who was the Associate Vice President for Annual Giving and Constituent Engagement at the UConn Foundation, on Sept. 13.

Mary Elizabeth Pattison, 92, of Naples, Fla., a retired employee of the Cooperative Extension Service both in Fairfield and Litchfield counties, on Sept. 3

John Petersen, 77, of Chapel Hill, N.C., who served as provost and executive vice president for academic affairs from 2000-2004, on Sept. 11.

Maria Nazare Sparmer, 64, of Montville, Conn., a former instructor in the School of Nursing, on Sept. 15.

Wayne Tillinghast, 89, of Groton Long Point, Conn., an adjunct professor at UConn Law from 1979-1999, on Sept. 26.
