John Bean (M.S. Civil Engineering, ’87), PE, GISP joined the Anchorage, Alaska-based engineering consultancy of Hattenburg Dilley and Linnell, LLC as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Manager. John is a certified GIS professional with more than 30 years’ experience working and teaching civil engineering, surveying and GIS. He is the immediate past president of the Alaska Section of the American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) and Chaired the 2012 Alaska Surveying and Mapping Conference. John also teaches part-time at the University of Alaska – Anchorage as an Associate Professor of Geomatics; he previously taught at Paul Smith’s College, Clarkson University, Central Connecticut State University and UConn, where he was a lecturer. Early in his career, he was a Senior Engineer with General Dynamics Electric Boat.
Charles J. Croce (B.S. Civil Engineering, ‘93), P.E., was recently promoted to Associate at Tighe & Bond, which he joined in 2008. Chuck is a project manager with more than 18 years of experience in site/civil and site/utility engineering on a wide variety of education, private, and municipal projects. Earlier in his career, he was a Project Manager at URS Corporation.
Rohan Freeman (B.S. Civil Engineering, ‘95), P.E., is expanding his Hartford-based civil engineering firm Freeman Companies LLC to include geotechnical services. He and his company were recently profiled in Decmber 10, 2012 Hartford Business Journal story. Before founding his company in 2009, he fulfilled a life-long dream by summiting Mount Everest and is the first African American to complete the Seven Summits.
James Towey (B.S.E., Electrical Engineering, ’87) has joined Onset Computer Corporation, Inc., a leading supplier of data loggers, as Director of Engineering. With a strong background in product development, engineering R&D, design, manufacturing, and support, James brings more than 25 years of extensive technology and business leadership experience to Onset. Most recently, he served as VP of Engineering for Empirix, and previously spent six years at Starent Networks as Director of IP Multimedia Development. James earned his M.S. at RPI and his MBA at UConn in 1996.
In Memoriam
Carl E. Schmid (M.S. Electrical Engineering, ‘65) died December 29, 2012 at the age of 80. Carl served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps as part of the Occupational Forces in Salzburg, Austria. He earned his B.S. in electrical engineering at New York University. For more than 36 years, he was a senior staff engineer for the Perkin-Elmer Corp., where he worked on aerospace and instrument group projects, including a reconnaissance camera and the Series 200 LC pump for liquid chromatography that is still used worldwide. Carl is credited with seven U.S. patents. Following retirement, he founded the consulting firm E/M Systems.
