“Celebration of Women in Engineering” February 18th

A variety of activities are planned at UConn in recognition of the national Discover Engineers Week (February 16-22, 2014), including an all-school Engineering Career Fair and "Celebration of Women in Engineering" activities to be held on Tuesday, February 18th.

A variety of activities are planned at UConn in recognition of the national Discover Engineers Week (February 16-22, 2014), including an all-school Engineering Career Fair and “Celebration of Women in Engineering” activities to be held on Tuesday, February 18th. Several major events, which are open to everyone, are scheduled.  These include:

Breakfast with Betty Shanahan

Keynote speaker: Betty Shanahan (Hon. D.Sc. ’12 UConn) is Executive Vice President, and former Executive Director and CEO, of the national Society of Women Engineers (SWE). Read about Betty’s career here. In her keynote, Betty will share her thoughts regarding the future of engineering and the role of women.

  • Location: Wilbur Cross North Reading Room
  • Format: Continental breakfast and keynote presentation real.victoria

 Women in Engineering Breakout Sessions

  • Time: 9:45 – 10:30 a.m.
  • Location: Wilbur Cross North Reading Room
  • Topics: “Myths and Misconceptions: Women in STEM,” “Women Engineering the Future:  Diversity of Thought,” and “Early Career”

Engineering Women/Poster Session

  • Time: 10:45 – 11:30 a.m.
  • Location: Wilbur Cross North Reading Room
  • Format: Student and team posters that include images and words depicting one of three topics: Women in Engineering, Diversity in Engineering, Empowerment. Prizes for the top three.

 “Women Engineering the Future” Panel Discussion

  • Time: 3:00 – 4:30 p.m.
  • Location: Student Union Theatre
  • Moderator:  Sharon Nunes (M.S., Ph.D. Materials Science, ’80, ’83), Vice President at IBM (retired)
  • Panelists:

o   Angela Cargill (MBA, B.S. Mechanical Engineering), Operations & Project Management Lead at Monsanto
o   Noha El-Ghobashy (M.S. Mechanical Engineering), Managing Director, Engineering Workforce and Global Development at ASME and President of Engineering for Change, LLC
o   Nadia Glucksberg (M.S. Environmental Science), Lead Hydrogeologist and Vice President at Haley & Aldrich, and Past President of Engineers Without Borders, Portland, ME Chapter
o   Allison MacKay (Ph.D. Environmental Engineering), United Technologies Corporation Associate Professor in Engineering Innovation, Civil & Environmental Engineering at UConn

These events are made possible due to the generous support provided by the School of Engineering, Society of Women Engineers, Monsanto, Haley & Aldrich, Sharon Nunes and Noha El-Ghobashy. During these events, “Real Engineers Wear Pink” long-sleeved t-shirts will be available for individuals who wish to wear their engineering pride.
