Winter Weekend and its famous – or infamous – “one ton sundae” have been a UConn tradition for more than a generation. During Winter Weekend, students, faculty and staff unwind with a variety of fun activities gauged to chase away the winter blues and connect with friends. View a PDF here.
The annual one ton sundae dates back to 1979. Drs. Sharon Nunes (M.S., Ph.D. Materials Science, ’80, ’83) and Ron Nunes (M.S. Ph.D. Materials Science ’80, ’83) were there to witness the birth of the tradition and recently shared a February 12, 1979 news clipping from The Connecticut Daily Campus showing photos from the weekend events, which included ice sculpting, live music and other performances, a pajama party beerfest and other activities.
In the 1979 news story at right (click to enlarge), Sharon and Ron are the two winter-hat clad students dishing up ice cream in the photo appearing in the bottom right-hand corner. Sharon is the former VP of IBM’s Smarter Cities Strategy & Solutions, and Academy of Distinguished Engineers inductee. Ron is a former Senior Engineering Manager at IBM’s Prototype Research Lab.
