Dr. Baki Cetegen, Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department, has been elected a Councilor to the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering (CASE). He will serve a five-year term commencing July 1, 2014. Dr. Cetegen joins colleague and fellow Council member Dr. Harris Marcus on the prestigious 11-member Council; professor emeritus Dr. Lee Langston serves as Chair of the CASE Energy Committee. The CASE Council comprises members from industry and academia and is responsible for a variety of activities and decisions, including setting the procedures governing election of new members, overseeing staff, confirming presidential appointments to committees, establishing the annual budget and dues, recommending changes to the CASE bylaws, hosting symposia and approval of CASE studies and the distribution of study reports.

Dr. Howard Epstein, professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering and a registered structural engineer, was one of four panelists featured on The Colin McEnroe Show broadcast January 7, 2014 on Connecticut public radio (WNPR). Dr. Epstein joined George Torello of Torello Engineers and two former Hartford Courant reporters in a discussion of the 1978 collapse of the Hartford Civic Center. Read and hear the broadcast here.

Jim Mahoney, Executive Program Director of UConn’s Connecticut Transportation Institute, was interviewed by WNPR January 20, 2014 on the science and solutions to that scourge of drivers everywhere: potholes. With Connecticut’s erratic weather cycling this year, it is possible the pothole problem will be even more vexing than during typical winter seasons.  Read the interview here.

A scholarly paper co-authored by Electrical & Computer Engineering associate professor Marten van Dijk, entitled “AEGIS: Architecture for Tamper-evident and Tamper-resistant Processing,” was selected for inclusion in “25 years of International Conference on Supercomputing” volume. The selection committee considered 100 most cited papers out of approximately 1800 papers published in the ICS proceedings between 1987 and 2011.
