From January 22nd to the 24th, the fifth annual Electronic Materials and Applications (EMA) conference was held in Orlando, Florida. Jointly programmed by the Electronics Division and Basic Science Division of the American Ceramic Society, EMA focuses on electroceramic materials for electronic, magnetic, dielectric and optical components, devices, and systems.
This year’s conference, EMA 2014, was organized by Associate Dean Professor Steven C. Tidrow (University of Texas-Pan American) and Professor Haiyan Wang (Texas A&M University), representing the Electronics Division, and Professor George A. Rossetti, Jr. of UConn MSE, representing the Basic Science Division. Dr. Rossetti states on his involvement in the conference:
It was an honor to serve one of the organizers for EMA 2014. This year’s meeting was the largest to date, with approximately 300 attendees, and attracted top scientists from around the world, including a large contingent of student participants. There were many excellent talks presented highlighting the most recent scientific advances and technological innovations in the field. It was also very gratifying to see the growing presence of UConn MSE, with a number of our faculty, alumni and students serving as symposium organizers, and delivering both invited and contributed lectures.
UConn MSE was well represented at EMA 2014, with over 20 professors and graduate students contributing invited lectures on the processing, properties, and computational design of electroceramic materials. Department Head Dr. Pamir Alpay and UConn MSE professors Dr. Ramamurthy Ramprasad and Dr. Bryan Huey also served as symposium organizers.
The meeting also featured plenary lectures by distinguished scientists, including Dr. James Bray, GE Global Research; Professor Jürgen Rödel, Technische Universität Darmstadt, Germany; and Dr. Joseph V. Mantese, United Technologies Research Center. Research Fellow at UTRC and MSE Industrial Board member, Dr. Mantese delivered his plenary talk on “Functional Electronic Materials in Integrated Commercial Buildings and Aerospace Systems.”
