Epic Shadows

A shadow puppet on loan from the Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry is part of an art exhibit on display at the UConn Health Center through Aug. 24.

A shadow puppet from India on loan from the Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry is part of an exhibit currently on display at the UConn Health Center.The UConn Health Center is currently showcasing a selection of artwork called Watercolors, Puppets and Kindergarten Masterpieces. Shown here is a shadow puppet on loan from the Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry. It is part of the collection of the late anthropologist, Walter Fairservis and is an example of the type of puppets used by groups of traveling entertainers in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh during the early twentieth century. The puppets were used to perform tales from the Ramayana and other Hindu epics. In addition to the puppet exhibit, called Epic Shadows, there is work by award winning artist Sharon Kocay of West Hartford, and from kindergarten students at West Hartford’s Eric G. Norfeldt School. The exhibit is located in the lobby and in the LeWitt Gallery and will be on display through August 24.
