When Susan Herbst came to UConn in 2011 as its 15th President, one of her top priorities was to get to know the needs and opinions of the student body – a sentiment she carries through to her work today.

Since her arrival, she has held regular office hours for students to share their ideas with her, ask questions, and provide suggestions, based on their experiences and observations.

Two such open office hours sessions are scheduled in the coming weeks in Herbst’s office at Gulley Hall: the first from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10; and the second from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

“The students have been so candid and eloquent, and the conversations remind me again and again how fortunate we are to work with such thoughtful young adults,” Herbst says. “UConn is a community of learning for all of us, not only our students, and I always look forward to the chance to learn from them during these sessions.”

Reservations are not necessary, but guests are limited to UConn students.

Herbst has used what she’s learned from the sessions to help shape important programs and initiatives at the University, including the faculty hiring plan that has drawn scores of talented scholars to UConn – while decreasing class sizes and offering more courses and sections, helping students get the classes they need to graduate on time.

Reminders about the President’s designated office hours will also be available to UConn students via the following channels:
