Iris Mauriello Elected Chair for the Association of American Medical Colleges Compliance Officers Forum

Iris Mauriello, compliance integrity/privacy officer, has been elected the presiding chair for the Association of American Medical Colleges Compliance Officers Forum. The COF addresses all aspects of academic health centers’ compliance issues, including regulatory compliance in hospital and physician billing, challenges of electronic health records, including medical student documentation, HIPAA privacy, and research.

Mauriello is also the leader of the Compliance Officers Forum Peer Evaluation Project – Best Practices. The main goal of this group is to assess the management of compliance programs and highlight practices that may benefit fellow COF member professionals.


Gould Receives National AHEC Organization Award for Social Justice

Dr. Bruce Gould, associate dean for primary care and director of the Connecticut Area Health Education Center Program (AHEC) has been selected as this year’s Andy Nichols Social Justice Award recipient by the National AHEC Organization (NAO). The Andy Nichols Award for social justice is given in honor of Dr. Andrew W. Nichols, a visionary who lived a life of service in pursuit of justice and health for all, and most specifically, for the disadvantaged. The Andy Nichols Award for Social Justice is given to an individual, a specific project, or an organization in the AHEC network that exemplifies his vision and persistent service in pursuit of social justice. Gould will receive the award at the National AHEC Conference July 30 to Aug. 2 in San Antonio.


Laurencin Presented with General Assembly Citation

Dr. Cato T. Laurencin, director at the Institute for Regenerative Engineering and chief executive officer at the Connecticut Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (CICATS) was presented with an official citation by the State of Connecticut General Assembly. It was signed by Senate President Pro Tempore Donald E. Williams, Jr., Speaker of the House Christopher Donovan, and Secretary of the State Denise Merrill.  Laurencin received this citation to recognize his many accomplishments as a professor and a surgeon at the UConn Health Center and for “being the first orthopaedic surgeon to achieve university professor level rank in the country; and, the first surgeon in the U.S. to be elected to the Third World Academy of Sciences.”


Arciero to Lead Prestigious Sports Medicine Society

Dr. Robert A. Arciero

Dr. Robert Arciero, professor and chief of the Sports Medicine Division of the UConn Health Center’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in the New England Musculoskeletal Institute, is now vice president of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. His nomination, at the AOSSM’s annual meeting this month in Baltimore, puts him in line to assume the AOSSM presidency in July 2014. Arciero’s contribution to sports medicine education earned him the AOSSM’s Rovere Award last year.
