The School of Engineering is pleased to announce that Dr. Bryan Huey has been promoted to department head of the Materials Science and Engineering Department, effective December 1, 2017.

Dr. Huey will be taking over the role from Dr. S. Pamir Alpay, who has been  department head since 2013.

Huey is a professor of materials science and engineering, and a core faculty member of the  Institute of Materials Science where his lab serves as the campus user facility for Atomic  Force Microscopy. He received his Ph.D. in materials science from the University of Pennsylvania in 1999.

Since joining the UConn faculty in 2004, Huey’s roles in MSE have included directing the graduate studies program, overseeing the honors program, and leading undergraduate recruiting. He is the past chair of the 1200-person Basic Science Division of the American Ceramic Society, received the Fulrath award for his joint research with collaborators in Japan on electronic ceramics, earned a Velux fellowship as a visiting professor to iNano in Denmark, and is one of 5 organizers for the 6000+ attendee 2019 MRS Fall Meeting. He is an expert in the development and application of advanced variations of Atomic Force Microscopy for nanoscale investigations of piezoelectrics, solar cells, data storage and transistor systems, and biological cells and tissue.

Huey said that he is excited to get started in his new role, and is eager to hit the ground running:

“I am looking forward to carrying on the tradition of excellence in the MSE department and collaborating with our campus and industry partners for education, research, and outreach,” Huey said.

Dr. Kazem Kazerounian, dean of the School of Engineering, thanked Alpay for his nearly five years of exceptional service, and emphasized the impact of his leadership in the MSE Department and in his new role, as Executive Director of the Innovation Partnership Building at the UConn Tech Park:

“Dr. Huey will be filling some big shoes, as Dr. Alpay moves on to focus on his role as the Executive Director of the Innovation Partnership Building at the UConn Tech Park,” Kazerounian said. “Pamir has done great work for the MSE Department since 2013. During his five-year tenure, that department grew its internal and external reputation, ramped up its research activities, increased student enrollment, and was exceptionally well-run.”

Kazerounian went on to say that he is confident that Huey is the right choice for the job:

“We are thrilled to have someone with Dr. Huey’s experience become the next department head of the MSE Department. With his strong leadership and academic background, I am excited to see him build on the progress Dr. Alpay made during his tenure, and I am confident he will do an excellent job in his new role.”
