On July 29 at the 2023 National Medical Association (NMA) annual meeting opening ceremonies University Professor Dr. Cato T. Laurencin was in attendance for the honoring of Neil R. Powe, M.D., M.P.H., M.B.A., with the Cato T. Laurencin M.D., Ph.D. Lifetime Research Award, one of the highest honors bestowed by the W. Montague Cobb/ National Medical Association Health Institute.
The award recognizes Powe as an individual who has demonstrated consistent, long lasting and highly impactful contributions to science, especially through research and inquiry. The award especially acknowledges individuals like Powe who have greatly enhanced a field of research and made it possible for young researchers to be successful.
Powe’s outstanding research contributions have centered on kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, and research addressing health disparities. His work for over a quarter century has improved basic knowledge with discoveries in biology, while his work in clinical medicine has advanced the health of countless patients. Powe serves as professor of medicine at the University of California at San Francisco and chief of medicine at the Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. He previously served as professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
