Philosophy Professor Ting-an Lin Receives Best Paper Award

Ting-an Lin, assistant professor of philosophy, received a Best Paper Award at the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence and the Association for Computing Machinery (AAAI/ACM) Conference on AI, Ethics, and Society (AIES).

Lin co-authored the award-winning paper, “AI, Normality, and Oppressive Things,” with Linus Ta-Lun Huang from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The paper examines how certain AI systems may subtly support existing social inequalities and emphasizes the need for solutions that address deeper social power dynamics.

The conference was held Oct. 20-22 in Madrid, Spain, bringing together scholars and experts from computer science, philosophy, law, public policy, and economics to explore the ethical and societal impacts of AI.
