Following in the Footsteps of Physicians for Human Rights

This fall UConn School of Medicine students are starting the UConn Immigration Rights Initiative (UIRI) to assist asylum seekers in their pursuit of safe haven in the U.S. Learn how their advocacy efforts have been guided by the internationally renowned Physicians for Human Rights, winners of the 2017 Dodd Prize who are set to be honored Nov. 2-3 at UConn and UConn Health.

"We had a great time," said Calhoun Cardiology Center patient Bill Donovan, heart attack and cardiac arrest survivor who ran the Hartford Half Marathon for the second time with his cardiologist. "Dr. Heiko Schmitt's time was 2:02 and mine was 2:47. We were both happy with our results."

Marathoner Out-Running His Heart Disease

Marathoner Bill Donovan is out-running his heart disease one race at a time. This year he was once again joined by his heart doctor, Dr. Heiko Schmitt, for the running of the Hartford Marathon.

UConn Foundation staff also ran the big race. Here is Heather McDonald, Lauren Prause, Rachel Marshall, Abbie O'Brien, Jack O'Brien (Abbie's son) and Jen Doak-Mathewson.

Cardiologists at UConn Health are now using tiny, implantable sensors to remotely monitor heart failure patients at home daily to discover immediately if their heart condition worsens and before symptoms arise.
