STORRS, Conn. – The University of Connecticut has announced that nursing student Leah Goldberg is the recipient of a Jo Anne J. Trow Scholarship from the National Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society for first-year students.
Goldberg, a junior in the School of Nursing who resides in WEST HARTFORD, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship for the 2009-2010 academic year.
The National Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society annually awards at least 35 Trow scholarships to outstanding students across the country. Competition is very high with only one application submitted per society chapter. Participants are then reviewed based on their academic records (minimum GPA of 3.5) and participation in a wide array of campus and community activities.
For the 2009 competition, more than 110 applications, submitted by more than 60 local chapters, were reviewed. “This year’s applicant pool was the largest ever, and selecting 35 winners from such a large group of outstanding students was, as always a challenge,” said James G. Stemler, chairman of the Society’s Trow scholarship Selection Committee.
“Leah is truly deserving of this award as she has demonstrated a high standard of learning, academic achievement and has given back to the UConn and local community,” says David Ouimette, advisor to UConn’s chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta and executive director of First Year Programs and Learning Communities at UConn.
Besides being a talented nursing student, Goldberg is an active member of the UConn’s Alpha Lambda Delta Chapter, Multicultural Business Society, the Student Alumni Association, and the Student Nurses Association.
“Leah is a dedicated member of the University of Connecticut’s chapter of ALD, and I am honored, but not surprised, that she was chosen to receive the Jo Anne J. Trow Scholarship,” says Lauren Griffin, vice president of the UConn chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta.
UConn’s Alpha Lambda Delta chapter will hold a ceremony in early fall to recognize Goldberg and her achievements. The tentative date is Sept. 8, at 8 p.m., during the chapter’s first general meeting.
