UConn will again offer University housing on the Storrs campus at a 50 percent discount as part of its Summer Session in Storrs package deal. On-campus housing was offered at a discounted price for the first time last year to students taking summer courses.

Students enrolled in Summer Session courses on the University’s main campus in Storrs have the option of living in single rooms in Connecticut Commons, double rooms assigned as singles in West Campus, or air-conditioned suite doubles in South Campus.

In addition, students registered for Summer Session in Storrs have several different discounted meal plan options to choose from to suit their specific needs. UConn’s Dining Services offers a traditional plan and basic plan, and, in response to student feedback, a third summer meal plan option has been added as well, offering meals Monday through Friday only.

Summer classes offer students the opportunity to concentrate on difficult course material, or catch up or get ahead with courses they need in order to graduate.

This past summer, UConn student Andrew Wine ’13 (CLAS) enrolled in two Summer Session courses – one of which was a Q course required for his major in political science.

“Quantitative courses do not come as naturally to me as the other theoretical coursework, so I took POLS 2072Q over the summer primarily so I could focus on one course without having other classes to study for,” Wine says. “The smaller class size was also a great help; the professor got to know all of us and what parts of the coursework we were comfortable with and where he could provide more explanation.”

Like Wine, Alicia Kruzansky ’12 (CLAS) chose to complete one of her more challenging required courses during Summer Session. “I never took physics in high school, and I wasn’t confident that I could handle it during my senior year in a lecture-style class,” she says. “Taking physics over the summer allowed me to dedicate more time to a difficult class.”

Summer Session classes will also be available online and at all of UConn’s regional campuses across the state, in Avery Point, Greater Hartford, Stamford, Torrington, and Waterbury.

Three- and six-week summer sessions will be running between May and August. Registration for all sessions began Feb. 27.

For students interested in taking advantage of the 50 percent discount on University housing on the Storrs campus this summer, the Summer in Storrs 2012 housing application will be available online, beginning March 5.
