The 2012 UConn Cancer Research Golf Tournament is in its 35th year. Get ready to tee off to fight cancer on Monday, August 6 at the Tumble Brook Country Club in Bloomfield.

This event, organized by a committee of volunteers in conjunction with the UConn Foundation, has raised more than $1.5 million for cancer research, prevention and education over its history. The 2011 tournament supported the purchase of a DNA sequencer to aid in research at the UConn Health Center’s Carole and Ray Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center. Proceeds from this year’s event will be used to hire a full-time researcher to run the DNA sequencer.

“With our DNA sequencer, we now have the capacity to analyze a person’s genetic makeup faster and easier than ever before. We can see how cancers differ from normal tissues, and use that knowledge to improve the way we diagnose and treat patients,” says Dr. Pramod K. Srivastava, director of the Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center. “This is truly remarkable equipment.”

Registration, practice and lunch start at 11:30 a.m. Shotgun start is at 12:30 p.m. Dinner, including cocktails, awards ceremony, and live and silent auctions, starts at 5:30 p.m.

The Tumble Brook Country Club is at 376 Simsbury Road in Bloomfield.
