UConn Announces 2013 Neag Medal Recipients

Honorees recognized for their legacies in treatment, education, public service or philanthropy.

The UConn Health Center will award the Carole and Ray Neag Medal of Honor to three outstanding honorees for their contributions to medicine at the Fourth Annual White Coat Gala at the Connecticut Convention Center on April 20, 2013. Title sponsorship is generously provided by Richard and Jane Lublin. Joe D’Ambrosio, the Voice of the Huskies, will host the event.

Recipients of the Neag Award are selected based on their legacies in treatment, education, public service or philanthropy. The 2013 recipients are:

  • The Chase Family
  • Thomas D. Taylor, DDS, professor and head of the Department of Reconstructive Services at the School of Dental Medicine
  • Posthumous Honor: Richard A. Garibaldi, MD (1942–2009), James E.C. Walker/PHS Professor of Medicine and chairman of the Department of Medicine

David and Rhoda Chase together with their children Cheryl, and her husband Stuart Bear, and Arnold, and his wife Sandra Chase, have generously supported research and patient care programs across the UConn Health Center, including the Chase Family Skeletal Biology Fund and the Chase Family Chair in Juvenile Diabetes.

Dr. Taylor is an internationally respected leader in prosthodontics and maxillofacial prosthetics. He has served as executive director of the American Board of Prosthodontics since 2001. Taylor was the first U.S.  member elected to the International Team for Oral Implantology in 1992 and served as the first non-European president in 2001.

UConn is posthumously honoring Dr. Garibaldi, who is remembered for his dedication to medicine and his profound effect on the UConn Health Center over 28 years as a clinician, scientist and educator. He helped shape academic medicine through leadership positions at the American College of Physicians, the American Society of Internal Medicine and the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine.
